Itdoesn’tfeelgoodtofakewhoyouare,andanincreasingamountofpsychologicalresearchisshowinghowandwhyithurts。BackinApril,forexample,MelissaDahlreportedoninterestingnewresearch,whichsuggestedthatfakingyourpersonalityatworkcouldleadto“burnoutandperhapsevenphysicalhealthconsequences。” It’sanareaoffairlyactiveresearch,particularlyamongsocialpsychologists。They’reintriguedbytheramificationsofsuppressingemotionalresponses,inparticular,becausesomuchofhumansociallifeandthereforehumanlifecomesdowntothesubtlewayswereact,mirror,andrespondtoeachother’semotionalcues。Suppressingemotions,andthereforethesecues,throwsabitofawrenchinthefinelytunedcognitivesystemswe’veevolvedtointeractwithandsupportoneanotherthrough。Asfarasresearcherscantell,thissortofsuppressioncanhavenegativeeffectsonbothongoingrelationshipsandfirstimpressions。 InaninterestingnewstudyintheJournalofPersonalityandSocialPsychology,AllisonM。TackmanandSanjaySrivastavaoftheUniversityofOregonsoughttobetterunderstandthewaysemotionalsuppressionmightaffectfirstimpressionjudgements。“Thebackgroundandmotivationforourstudywasthatpreviousstudies,goingbackawhilenow,haveshowninvariouswaysthatpeoplewhouseexpressivesuppressionexperiencesocialcosts,”saidSrivastavainanemail。“Theyhavelesssocialsupport,lesssatisfyingsociallives,andtheyexperiencetroublegettingclosetoothers。Sothenextquestionis,whywhatisgoingwrong?” Tobetterunderstandthisphenomena,theresearchersvideotapedfourindividualswatchingthefunny,famousfakeorgasmscenefromWhenHarryMetSallyandasadscenefromthe1979filmTheChamp。Sometimestheactorsweretoldtoreactnaturallytothescenes,andsometimestheyweretoldtosuppresstheirreaction。Theparticipantsinthestudy,149undergraduates,thenwatchedallfourversionsofthevideowithoutaudio(havingbeentoldtoobservethesubjectscarefully),andwererandomlyassignedtoeithera“context”conditioninwhichtheycouldseewhatthepersoninthevideowasreactingto,ora“nocontext”conditioninwhichtheycouldn’t: “Afterwatchingeachvideo,participantsreportedtheirjudgmentsofthetarget’semotionexperience,personalityjudgmentsofthetarget,andinterestinaffiliatingwiththetarget,”theresearcherswrite,aswellasansweringabunchofotheritems。Overall,thesuppressorswerejudgedtobelessextroverted,lessagreeable,andmore“avoidantincloserelationships”moredistant,thanthenonsuppressors。Suppressingalsohada“largeeffect,”astheresearchersputit,ontheparticipants’desiretoaffiliatewithsuppressorsascomparedtononsuppressorstheyfoundthemmuchlesslikable。 “Whatwefound,inanutshell,isthatotherpeoplejudgesuppressorstobelowinextraversionandlowinagreeableness,”saidSrivastava。“Orinmoreeverydaylanguage,theyseemlikethesortofpeoplewhoaresociallydistantandindifferenttoothers’feelings。Andthoseimpressionshelpexplainwhyothersdon’twanttogetclosetothem。” Therewasatleastonepossiblynoteworthyexception,though,tothegeneralsuppressionisbadstory:Folkswhowatchedtheorgasmscene,butforwhomthestudyparticipantscouldseewhattheywerewatching,wereviewedasmorepolitethanthosewhodidn’tstifletheirlaughter,apparentlybecauseoftheclip’sracycontent(inthenoncontextconditiontheparticipantshadnowayofknowingwhattheyweresuppressingamusementat)。 “Thissuggeststhatsuppressionmaysometimeshavepositiveeffects,andinthefutureitwouldbeinterestingtoexamineothercircumstancesinwhichsuppressionissociallybeneficial(ratherthansociallycostly),”saidTackman。“Incontextswheresuppressionisanormativeresponseorsociallyappropriate,spersonality?” Inotherwords,therearecommonsensereasonstothinkthatsuppressionissometimesagoodthingmaybe“rewithcertainpeople,”asSrivastavaputit,“reincertainsocialroles,orwhenyouhavecertaingoals。”Suppressingemotion,afterall,popsupinallsortsofwildlydifferentculturesit’ssomethinghumanitydoesquitefrequently。Findingoutwhy,andwhenthisbehaviorisbeneficial,isthenextstep。
