  ReturningtotheliterarycommunityofParis,Dumascontinuedtowritepopularplays,stickingtohistoricalworksthathefilledwithmelodrama。Healsobegantowritetravelliterature,whichledtoawalkingtourofsouthernFrancein1834〔5〕(atourthathewouldlaterputtouseinTheCountofMonteCristo)。Inthelate1830s,Dumasbeganwritingnovels,asmuchforfinancialgainasforartisticreasons。Atthattime,itwascommonforcheapnewspaperstorunnovelsinserialform。Ifawriterwasadeptatwritingquicklyandmelodramatically,asDumaswas,thefinancialincentiveswouldbeenormous。Dumaswassogoodatthissortofwritingthathesometimeshadthreeorfourserialnovelsrunningsimultaneously。HiswritingsoonmadehimthemostfamousFrenchmanofhisday,andhegainedrenownthroughouttheWesternworld。In1844,thesameyearwhenhepublishedTheThreeMusketeers,DumasbegantheserializationofTheCountofMonteCristo。Hecontinuedwritingprolificallyformostofhislife,publishinghislastnovel,ThePrussianTerror,in1867,threeyearsbeforehisdeath。
  Dumaswasalsoagenerousman,grantingmoneyandgiftstovirtuallyanyonewhoasked。Dumas’selfindulgentlifestyleandexcessivegenerosityeventuallytookatollonhisfinance。Bythetimehesufferedastrokein1870,hewasfarfromarichman,despitethefactthathehadearnedmillionsofdollarsinhislifetime。HediedinDecember,1870。
  2。3TheoriginofthestoryofTheCounteofMonteCristo
  Dumas’liberalborrowingfromoutsidesourcesoccasionallybroughthimaccusationsofplagiarism。Whileheliftedmanyofhisplotlinesfromtheworksofotherauthorsandfromhistoricalevents,hemoldedthesestoriesinhisowncharacteristicway,makingthemhisown。TheCountofMonteCristoisanexampleoftheappropriationprocessDumasfrequentlyemployed。HisinspirationforthenovelwasfromananecdotehereadinMemoireshistoriquestiresdesarchivesdelapolicedeParis,〔6〕acollectionofintriguingcriminalcasesrecordedbyJacquesPeuchet,aformerpolicearchivist。Theanecdoterelatesthatin1807,amannamedFranccedil;oisPiccedil;audbecameengagedtoaprettyandwealthygirl,inspiringtheenvyofhisfriends。Oneofthesefriends,Loupian,persuadedtheotherstojoinhimindenouncingPiccedil;audasanEnglishspy。Thoughinnocentofthecharge,Piccedil;audwasarrestedandkeptinprisonforsevenyears。Whileinprison,hebefriendedarichItalianclericwholeftPiccedil;audhisvastfortunewhenhedied。Piccedil;audreturnedtoParisin1815asawealthyman。Usinghiswealth,aswellasnumerousdisguises,heenactedacomplexplantoavengehimselfonhisenemies,murderingseveralofthem。ThoughthisreallifestoryhasalltheessentialplotelementsofDumas’novel,itlacksthefantastical,epicproportionsofagreatmelodrama。Dumas’greatestgiftwashisabilitytograntepicproportiontoexistingstories。〔7〕
