　　冬至是中国传统二十四节气（the 24 traditional Chinese solar terms）中的第二十二个节气，英文为 Winter Solstice 。＂冬至＂发生在12月21日-12月23日之间。冬至当天，太阳几乎直射南回归线（Tropic of Capricorn），在这天，北半球的白昼时间达到一年最短，夜晚时间达到一年最长。

　　As early as Zhou Dynasty  (c.11th century-256 BC) ,   people worshipped the gods on the first day of the Winter Solstice, which was also the first day of the new year. The Winter Solstice became a winter festival during the Han Dynasty  (206 BC-220 AD)  . The celebratory activities were officially organized. On this day, both officials and common people would have a rest。
