Parents’estimationsoftheirchildren’shappinessdiffersignificantlyfromthechild’sownassessmentoftheirfeelings,astudyhasshown。 ResearchbypsychologistsatPlymouthUniversityshowedparentsof10and11yearoldsconsistentlyoverestimatedtheirchild’shappiness,whilethosewith15and16yearoldswereinclinedtounderestimate。 PublishedintheJournalofExperimentalChildPsychology,thestudyattributedthediscrepanciestoan“egocentricbias”throughwhichparentsrelytooheavilyontheirownfeelingsinassessingthehappinessofthefamilyunitasawhole。 Children’sandadolescents’happinesshasgainedconsiderableattentioninrecentresearch,howeverthepotentialproblemsofrelyingonparentalreporttoassesschildren’shappinesshavebeenoverlooked。 Researcherssaythislateststudycouldprovidevaluableinformation,notonlyforadvancingknowledgeaboutwellbeingbutalsoforimprovingparentchildrelationshipsandpavingthewayforcarryingoutimprovedinterventions。 ThestudywasconductedbyDrBelnLpezPrez,PostdoctoralResearchFellowinDevelopmentalandSocialPsychologyatPlymouthUniversity,andEllieWilson,arecentgraduateoftheBSc(Hons)Psychologycourse。 Theyquestionedatotalof357childrenandadolescentsfromtwodifferentschoolsinSpain,alongwiththeirparents,andtheirhappinesswasassessedusingarangeofselfreportingmeasuresandratings。 Theresultsshowedthatparentswereinclinedtoscoreachildoradolescents’happinesscloselyinlinewiththeirownemotionalfeelings,whereasinfacttherewerenodifferencesinthechild’sownreports。 Inthisregard,childrenandadolescentsreportedverysimilarlevelsofhappiness,howeverparentsalsoreporteddifferentlevelsdependingontheageoftheirchild。Thus,thestudynotonlyshoweddiscrepanciesbetweeninformantsbutalsoadeclineinthelevelofhappinessinparentsofadolescents。 “Studyinginformants’discrepanciesandtherelationshipbetweenparents’andchildren’sselfreportsonhappinessisvitaltodeterminewhetherparentalreportisvalid,”DrLopezPerezsays。“Beingunabletoreadchildren’shappinessappropriatelymayincreasemisunderstandingbetweenparentsandchildrenadolescents,whichhasbeenshowntohavenegativeconsequencesforparentchildrelationships。Furthermore,parentsmightnotbeabletoprovidetheappropriateemotionalsupportorattendtotheirchildren’sneedsaccurately。”
