Peoplewhofearrelationshipconflictsarejustashappywhentheyaresingleorinarelationship,accordingtonewresearchpublishedbytheSocietyforPersonalityandSocialPsychology。 “It’sawelldocumentedfindingthatsinglepeopletendtobelesshappycomparedtothoseinarelationship,butthatmaynotbetrueforeveryone。Singlepeoplealsocanhavesatisfyinglives,”saidleadresearcherYuthikaGirme,apsychologydoctoralcandidateattheUniversityofAucklandinNewZealand。 Inasurveyofmorethan4,000NewZealandresidents,anationallyrepresentativesample,peoplewithhigh“avoidancesocialgoals”whotryatallcoststoavoidrelationshipdisagreementsandconflictwerejustashappybeingsingleasotherpeoplewereinrelationships。Beingsinglemayremovesomeoftheanxietytriggeredbyrelationshipconflictsforthoseindividuals,thestudynoted。Somepreviousresearchhasshownthatbeingsingleusuallyisassociatedwithslightlylowerlifesatisfactionandpoorerphysicalandpsychologicalhealth。 Conversely,thestudyfoundthatparticipantswithlowavoidancegoalswhoaren’tconcernedabouttheupsanddownsofarelationshipwerelesshappywhentheyweresingle。Thestudyparticipantsrangedinagefrom18to94yearsoldwithlongtermrelationshipslastingalmost22yearsonaverage。Onefifthoftheparticipantsweresingleatthetimeofthestudy。TheresearchwaspublishedonlineinSocialPsychologicalandPersonalityScience。 Tryingtoohardtoavoidrelationshipconflictsactuallymaycreatemoreproblems,Girmesaid。Whilehighavoidancegoalsmayhelppeoplebehappierwhentheyaresingle,itcanhavenegativeeffectsinarelationship,contributingtoanxiety,loneliness,lowerlifesatisfaction,andanunhealthyfocusonnegativememories,accordingtopriorresearch。 Withahighdivorcerate,soloparenting,andmanypeopledelayingmarriagetopursuecareergoals,thenumberofsinglepeopleisontherise。SinglepeoplenowoutnumbermarriedadultsintheUnitedStates,withmorethan128millionsinglesrepresenting51percentoftheadultpopulation。 Thestudyalsoanalyzedtheeffectsof“approachsocialgoals,”wherepeopleseektomaintainrelationshipsbyenhancingintimacyandfosteringgrowthtogetheraspartners。Studyparticipantswithhighapproachgoalsweregenerallymoresatisfiedwiththeirlivesbutalsoexperiencedthemosthappinesswhentheywereinarelationshipcomparedtothosewhoweresingle。Theresearchersfoundsimilarresultsinaseparatesurveyof187UniversityofAucklandstudents。 “Havinggreaterapproachgoalstendstohavethebestoutcomesforpeoplewhentheyareinarelationship,buttheyalsoexperiencethemosthurtandpainwhentheyaresingle,”Girmesaid。
