Developmentalfactorslinkingintelligenceandwellbeinginyoungadultsmaydifferfromthosefoundinchildrenandadolescents,accordingtoresearchersfromJamesMadisonUniversityinVirginia。 Thestudy,designedtoexaminetherelationshipbetweenintelligenceandwellbeinginyoungadults,wasconductedbyDr。CliftonJ。WigtilandhiscolleagueDr。GreggR。HenriquesandpublishedinPsychologyofWellBeing:Theory,ResearchandPractice。 Between2003and2005,wellbeingscoreswerethenmatchedtoSATscores。 ResearchersutilizedareducedversionofRyff’sScalesofPsychologicalWellBeing(SPWB)measurementtoassesswellbeingintheirsampleof3,829studentparticipants。Researcherswereinterestedinevaluatingwhetherintelligence(usingbothSATverbalandmathcomponentscores)hadapositiverelationshipwiththeautonomy,environmentalmastery,personalgrowthandpurposeinlifesubscalesoftheSPWB。 Contrarytowhatresearchersanticipated,ratherthanpersonalwellbeingscores(PWB)beinghigheramongmoreintelligentstudents,scorestendedtobeloweronfouroutthefivetestedsubscalesoftheRyffmeasurement。 “Thisstudyrevealedthatforthesampleofyoungadults,moreintelligentstudentswere,thelowertheirPWBtendedtobefourofthefivetesteddimensions,”WigtilandHenriqueswroteinthestudy。“Theextenttowhichotherfactors,suchaspersonalityandorgender,interactwithintelligenceinitsrelationshiptoPWB,isasubjectrichinpotentialfuturestudy。Becausechildhoodintelligencehasproventobeapositivepredictoroflateroccupationalstatus,andadulthoodintelligenceofcurrentoccupationalstatus,itseemslikelythatthemoreintelligentyoungadultsare,thegreaterlikelihoodthattheycandevelopintothemostproductiveandinfluentialmembersofsociety,yetwithoutconsideringotherfactorssuchasPWB,sucheffortsmaybeincomplete。” Accordingtothestudyauthors,thesedataare“inconsistentwithfindingsfrompreviousstudiesofadolescentsandchildren。Thismaybeduetothedevelopmentaldifferencesbetweenyoungadultsversusadolescentsandchildren。” Researchersdidfind,however,thatthewellbeingsubscaleof“PositiveRelationswithOthers”(PR)andSATVerbalscoresconfirmedacurvilinearrelationship,supportingtheoriginalhypothesisthathigherlevelsofintelligencewouldindicatelowerscoresonthePRsubscale。 Consequently,thisfindingsupportstheconceptthathighlygiftedstudents(i。e。,highlyintelligentstudents)maybenefitfrominterventionsthataddresspossiblesocialisolationthatistheorizedtooccurinthisgroupofstudents。 Asthestudyauthorsconclude:“researchintoeffectiveinterventionsintoPWBforsuchstudents,aswellashowtheymaybetailoredinordertoaccountforpossibleinteractiveeffectsofdevelopment,gender,orpersonality,couldultimatelyimprovethelivesoftheseindividualswithgreatpotentialtosuccessandimprovetheworld。”
