Romanticopportunitiesappeartoinfluencewomen’ssexualidentitiesbutnotmen’s,suggestsanewstudythatwillbepresentedatthe110thAnnualMeetingoftheAmericanSociologicalAssociation(ASA)。 “Thisindicatesthatwomen’ssexualitymaybemoreflexibleandadaptivethanmen’s,”saidstudyauthorElizabethAuraMcClintock,anassistantprofessorofsociologyattheUniversityofNotreDame。 McClintock’sstudyreliesondatafromtheNationalLongitudinalStudyofAdolescenttoAdultHealth(AddHealth)andconsidersitsfirst(19941995),third(20012002),andfourth(20072008)waves。Morespecifically,shetracked5,018womenand4,191menastheymovedfromadolescencetoyoungadulthood。Onaverage,theywere16yearsoldinWaveI,22inWaveIII,and28inWaveIV。 Confirmingpreviousresearch,McClintockfoundthatwomenweremorelikelythanmentoreportbisexuality,whilemenweremorelikelytoreportbeingeither“100percentheterosexual”or“100percenthomosexual。”ShealsofoundthatwomenwerethreetimesmorelikelythanmentochangetheirsexualidentitiesfromWaveIIItoWaveIVofAddHealth。AddHealthparticipants,whowerenotaskedabouttheirsexualidentitiesuntilWaveIII,couldidentifyas100percentheterosexual,mostlyheterosexual,bisexual,mostlyhomosexual,and100percenthomosexual。 IneachwaveofAddHealththatMcClintockusedforherstudy,participantswerealsoaskediftheyhadeverexperiencedsamesexattractionorparticipatedinsamesexsexualactivity。 “Womenhaveagreaterprobabilitythanmenofbeingattractedtobothmenandwomen,whichgivesthemgreaterflexibilityinpartnerchoice,”saidMcClintock。“Havingflexiblesexualattractionsmaygrantgreaterimportancetocontextualandexperientialfactorswhenitcomestosexualidentity。” McClintock’sresearchshowedthatwomenwithmoreeducationandwomenwhoweremorephysicallyattractive(asratedbytheirAddHealthinterviewers)hadhigherprobabilitiesofidentifyingas“100percentheterosexual”thanotherwomeninWavesIIIandIVofAddHealth。Inaddition,womenwhohadachildbyWaveIIIwerelesslikelythanotherwomentoidentifyas“100percentheterosexual”inWaveIV。 McClintockspeculatedthatwomenwhoavoidedyoungmotherhood,werephysicallyattractive,orhadhighlevelsofeducationmayhavebeenlesslikelytoexplorerelationshipswithsamesexpartnersbecausetheyhadmoreromanticopportunitieswithmalepartners。Inotherwords,theirsocialpositionfacilitatedaheteroconformistidentityandthusdiscouragedalternativesexualidentities,accordingtoMcClintock。 “Womenwithsomedegreeofattractiontobothmalesandfemalesmightbedrawnintoheterosexualityiftheyhavefavorableoptionsintheheterosexualpartnermarket,”McClintocksaid。“Womenwhoareinitiallysuccessfulinpartneringwithmen,asismoretraditionallyexpected,mayneverexploretheirattractiontootherwomen。However,womenwiththesamesexualattractions,butlessfavorableheterosexualoptionsmighthavegreateropportunitytoexperimentwithsamesexpartners。Womenwhoactonsamesexattractionaremorelikelytoincorporatesamesexsexualityintotheirsexualidentities。” Interestingly,formen:higherlevelsofeducationwereassociatedwithalowerlikelihoodofidentifyingas“100percentheterosexual”inWavesIIIandIVofAddHealth,physicalattractivenesshadnoclearassociationwithsexualidentity,andthosewhobecamefathersbyWaveIIIweremorelikelytoidentifyas“100percentheterosexual”inWaveIV。 “Menarelessoftenattractedtobothsexes,”McClintocksaid。“Men’ssexualityis,inthissense,lessflexible。Ifamanisonlyattractedtoonesex,romanticopportunitywouldlittlealterhissexualidentity。” McClintocksaidsexualidentityisasocialconstruct。“ItisimportanttoemphasizethatIamnotsuggestingthatsamesexunionsareasecondbestoptiontoheterosexualunions,”McClintocksaid。“AndIdonotthinkthatwomenarestrategicallyselectinganadvantageoussexualidentityorthattheycan‘choose’whethertheyfindmen,women,orbothsexuallyattractive。Rather,socialcontextandromanticexperiencemightinfluencehowtheyperceiveandlabeltheirsexualidentity。”
