There’snoreasontothinkthatwearereliablereportersofeveryaspectofourminds。Psychology,infact,givesuslotsofexamplesofwhereweoftengetthingswrong。ThefeelingofdecidingintheLibetexperimentmaybeacompleteillusionmaybetherealdecisionreallyismade‘byourbrains’somehowormaybeitisjustthatthefeelingofdecidingisdelayedfromouractualdeciding。Justbecauseweerroneouslyreportthetimingofthedecision,doesn’tmeanweweren’tintimatelyinvolvedinit,inwhatevermeaningfulsensethatcanbe。 MoreiswrittenabouttheLibetexperimenteveryyear。Ithasspawnedanacademicindustryinvestigatingtheneuroscienceoffreewill。Therearemanycriticismsandrebuttals,withdebateragingabouthowandiftheexperimentisrelevanttothefreedomofoureverydaychoices。EvensupportersofLibethavetoadmitthatthesituationusedintheexperimentmaybetooartificialtobeadirectmodelofrealeverydaychoices。Butthebasicexperimentcontinuestoinspirediscussionandprovokenewthoughtsaboutthewayourfreedomisrootedinourbrains。Andthat,I’dargue,isduetothewayithelpsusconfrontourintuitionsaboutthewaythemindworks,andtoseethatthingsaremorecomplexthanweinstinctivelyimagine。
